The Nutrition Policy Institute conducts applied research to inform and strengthen policies, programs, and environments for healthy children, families, and communities in California and the nation. The mission and vision of the Nutrition Policy Institute are:
- Improve nutrition by engaging in research and communications that inform, build, and strengthen policy.
- Envision a world where healthy food, beverages, and opportunities for physical activity are convenient, accessible, affordable, and sustainable.
Nutrition Policy Institute Fellowships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in recognition of their potential to contribute to the mission and vision of the Nutrition Policy Institute (NPI) as outlined in this application. This is a 10-month fellowship open to applicants who meet the eligibility and application requirements. The fellowship includes a $4,000 stipend and will require approximately 10 hours of work per week. The fellowship will begin in September or October 2023 and can be completed remotely. One fellowship will be awarded.
Fellow Responsibilities Include
- Manage NPI’s social media channels, including drafting, editing, curating, designing, and posting relevant content
- Track social media analytics
- Track, develop and post content to the NPI website
- Develop content for NPI’s quarterly electronic newsletters
- Assist with the creation and implementation of a communications calendar
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
- Knowledge of the fields of nutrition, obesity prevention, food policy, or public health
- Experience managing social media accounts and website design
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Proficiency in marketing/communications tools, such as MailChimp, Google Analytics, and email marketing automation software
- Students in the field of public health, public policy, public health nutrition, nutrition and dietetics, maternal and child health, or relevant fields are encouraged to apply
Eligibility
An applicant must:
- Be a registered undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university and plan to remain enrolled for the duration of the award period OR be a recent postgraduate (having graduated the preceding quarter or semester).
- Be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, F1 or J1 Visa holder, or California AB540 student.
- Have a GPA of at least 3.0.
- Be proficient in using Microsoft 365 programs (Word, Excel, etc.) or their equivalent Google Apps.
- Be a first-generation college student OR are an underrepresented minority student in good academic standing.
Underrepresented minorities: Races or ethnicities whose representation in science and dietetics employment is smaller than their representation in the U.S. population. This includes: Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Filipino, Hmong, Vietnamese, or two or more races, when one or more are from the preceding racial and ethnic categories in this list.
