Undergraduate Preparation for Admission

Applied Mathematics is inter-disciplinary and accepts students from a variety of backgrounds, including mathematics, engineering, and physics. Incoming students are expected to have knowledge of the following subjects in order to be successful in the graduate curriculum:

  • Basic computer programming in one or more of these formal languages: Fortran, C/C++, Python
  • Mathematical linear algebra
  • Ordinary differential equations
  • Four quarters of calculus
  • Some partial differential equations
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB
Application Materials

Application Fee (Domestic): $135

  • Applied Mathematics Ph.D. applicants that are California residents currently enrolled in a Master's program or with a Master's from a UC or CSU school with a minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA are eligible for an application fee waiver. Applicants need to submit their fee waiver request and completed application along with the supporting documents by Dec 15th, 2023 on the application website. Contact the Graduate Advisor for confirmation.

Application Fee (International):  $155

  • International applicants are not eligible for an application fee waiver or exemption.
