Baskin and Dissertation-Year Fellowships Application

We are now accepting applications for the following fellowships:


Jack Baskin & Peggy Downes Baskin Fellowship (One Fellowship Available)
This award is based on academic merit and designed to enable an engineering PhD candidate to make swifter progress on their dissertation research.  This academic year-long fellowship provides a stipend of $29,250 plus in-state tuition remission. Non-resident tuition is not included. 

To be eligible for the award, a student must:

  1. Have completed all PhD coursework (at the time of application).
  2. Be within normative time and in good academic standing.

President's Dissertation-Year Fellowship (One Fellowship Available)
The Presidential DYF is based on both academic merit and diversity criteria:  the academic achievement of the nominee, the potential for success in academia, and the extent the nominee contributes to the diversity among doctoral degree recipients in the division.  To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or an undocumented student who qualifies for nonresident supplemental tuition exemptions under AB 540, and MUST be in a position to complete the dissertation by June 2024. It is required that all nominees be advanced to candidacy as of Summer 2022. This academic year-long fellowship provides a stipend of $29,250 plus payment of resident tuition for the academic year. Non-resident tuition is not included.

Chancellor's Dissertation-Year Fellowship (One Fellowship Available)
All PhD students regardless of citizenship are eligible for this fellowship.  This award is based on academic merit. The nominee MUST be in a position to complete the dissertation by June 2024. It is required that all nominees be advanced to candidacy as of Summer 2022. This academic year-long fellowship provides a stipend of $29,250 plus payment of resident tuition for the academic year. Non-resident tuition is not included.

Dissertation-Year Fellowship (10 Quarter-Long Fellowships Available)
All PhD students regardless of citizenship are eligible for this fellowship.  This award is based on academic merit. The nominee MUST be in a position to complete the dissertation by June 2024. It is required that all nominees be advanced to candidacy as of Summer 2022. These quarter-long fellowships provide a stipend of $9,750 plus payment of resident tuition. Non-resident tuition is not included.

Timeline for Review

April 3, 2023 - Deadline for faculty advisors to submit the required letter of support for their advisee.

April 10, 2023 - Deadline for Graduate Director/Department to submit final nominations (one Presidents, one Chancellors, and two DYF).

April 21, 2023 - Deadline for Graduate Fellowship Review Committee to select DYF recipients.
