Funding Opportunities

Masters of Science students are typically self-supported and should assume they will not receive any form of financial support from the University. Please review the following for detailed information regarding types of funding.

Fellowships

A small number of fellowship packages are extended to HCI students that may include stipends, partial payment of fees and tuition. Recipients of these fellowships are selected based on financial need and merit.

Federal Loans

Federal Loans are available to domestic graduate students through the Financial Aid Office. Applicants must complete FAFSA online. We encourage you to complete your FAFSA as soon as possible, even if you are only considering applying for graduate school.

Teaching Assistantships

M.S. students may apply for a limited number Teaching Assistant (TA) opportunities in BSOE, as well as TA positions in other UCSC departments. A TA is a registered graduate student in full-time residence, chosen for excellent scholarship and for promise as a teacher, and serving an apprenticeship under the active tutelage and supervision of a regular faculty member. TAs are hired on a quarterly basis beginning approximately 10 weeks prior to the start of the quarter.

TAs who work 10 hours per week or more are eligible for remissions on their in-state fees (CA tuition, student services fee, and GSHIP). For more information on TA fee remissions see the Division of Graduate Studies Student Handbook

Please note that PhD students receive priority for TA positions.

Cost of Attendance

The HCI M.S. program is a Professional Degree and is subject to the Professional Degree Supplement Tuition fees. Please see the Tuition and Fees for academic year 2022-2023. All tuition and fees are subject to change.
