*PLEASE NOTE THE UPCOMING UNIVERSITY DEADLINES*
Please note the following upcoming university deadlines, and ALWAYS check the Academic and Administrative Calendar for important dates and deadlines. Bookmark this year's Academic and Administrative Calendar and refer to it regularly.
Friday, December 18th Leave of Absence Fall Deadline
Deadline to petition for leave of absence (LOA) beginning the next quarter. LOA forms must be approved/signed by your faculty advisor and submitted to the BSOE Graduate Advising office by the posted deadline. LOA application forms are available on the Graduate Division's website.
DARPA I2O Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
This I2O RA is specifically focused on supporting research by computer science postdoctoral fellows to drive innovation in specific research areas detailed in the RA. The research topics were selected from I2O PM submissions. I2O provides this funding opportunity to address challenges to the career planning processes of PhD graduates and the faculty hiring process of U.S. institutions of higher education that are emerging due to the pandemic. This RA is intended to mitigate these adverse impacts and enhance the health of the U.S. computer science research workforce moving forward.
Participation is open to individuals who are U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents: (1) who have received a PhD degree no earlier than June 2019 or (2) who will have received a PhD prior to the date of award, and (3) who will be appointed to a postdoctoral position at a U.S. institution of higher education (hereafter referred to as "university") during the 2021-22 academic year. This RA permits submission of the initial Technical Volume to be made prior to the formal appointment of the postdoctoral fellow. During the full proposal stage, the Principal Investigator at the university must be identified. Award is contingent on formal appointment of the identified eligible individual to a postdoctoral position prior to the time the award is made.

NEW Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy - Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning - Winter 2021
https://citl.ucsc.edu/
This five-part workshop series provides graduate student educators with research-based approaches to teaching writing in their disciplines. The aim of the program is to provide a theoretical and practical toolkit for teaching disciplinary writing that transfers to multiple contexts: when teaching as a TA for departmental disciplinary communication (DC) courses; when teaching courses of one’s own design, as a GSI as well as in future teaching positions; and when writing in one’s own disciplinary contexts.
The program is organized around a learning community that explores the following topics:
- evidence-based approaches to writing pedagogy, including understanding the significance of disciplinary and writing threshold concepts;
- writing assignment and assessment design; and
- equity-minded, student-centered approaches to both teaching and assessing writing.
With an interdisciplinary community of peers, graduate student participants will (re-)design a writing assignment, a rubric for evaluating disciplinary writing, and an active learning activity that invites students to practice a key disciplinary writing skill.
*PLEASE NOTE: This certificate program is a professional development opportunity that does not satisfy the requirements to teach as a GSI in the Writing Program at UCSC. Please consult with the Writing Program to determine your eligibility to teach UCSC Writing courses.
Program Dates & Information
In Winter 2021, this program will be offered virtually through a series of asynchronous and synchronous activities. Synchronous sessions will be held on five Fridays during the Winter quarter at 10:00am-12:00pm (Pacific Time):
January 15 (week 2)
January 29 (week 4)
February 12 (week 6)
February 26 (week 8)
March 12 (week 10)
How to Participate
Registration for this program will open at 9:00am (Pacific Time) on Monday, November 30 and will close at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) on Sunday, December 6. Graduate students in any discipline are encouraged to register. We especially invite and encourage participation from graduate students who teach/TA for disciplinary communication (DC) courses in their departments.
Register here (starting November 30)
The program is limited to 30 graduate students in any discipline. By registering in this program, participants commit to:
- actively participating in the five scheduled synchronous sessions in Winter quarter;
- completing asynchronous tasks, including short reading assignments;
- completing three projects, including a (redesigned) writing assignment, a rubric, and an active learning activity--materials that are great for a teaching portfolio as well as current and future teaching contexts;
- preparing a brief presentation of the above projects for sharing with other participants;
- providing feedback on and engaging with peers’ projects and ideas.
Slug Support Pantry Fall Hours
Graduate students will have access during all the open hours. The Basic Needs team has designated grad only pantry hours specifically on Tuesdays 3:45 - 6:00 pm. Grads should enter via the patio so that we can keep the front door of the coffee shop closed to avoid other students trickling in.

eBay's Machine Learning Competition for Students
For the second year, eBay is running a ML Challenge. The prize of the competition is an internship at eBay for the winning student or team.
The announcement attached describes the competition in more detail, but in a nutshell:
The question we invite you to address is how to identify two or more listings as being for the same product by putting them into the same group. We call this Purchase Level Equivalency (PLE). That is, if a buyer purchased two items from two different listings in a single group, they would assess that they had obtained two instances of the same product.
The competition started August 24. It is being hosted on EvalAI.
Please feel free to ask any questions. We have set up a mailbox dedicated to this competition at MLChallenge@ebay.com.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tracks at Sea Challenge
Announcing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tracks at Sea Challenge conducted by the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC PAC) and the Naval Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Coordination Office, managed by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
The goal of this challenge is to engage with the workforce of tomorrow on relevant Naval problems. The need here is to augment unmanned surface vehicles’ (USVs’) maritime contact tracking capability. The technology developed for this prize challenge will solve this problem by developing a computer vision system that will plot the tracks of shipping traffic exclusively using the passive sensing capability of onboard cameras. This technology would also be applicable for the Navy to document vessels performing unsafe navigation on the high seas.
NIWC PAC has established $200,000 as the total amount set aside for cash prizes under this challenge. Prizes will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th places in the amounts of $55,000, $45,000, $35,000, $30,000, $20,000, $10,000, and $5000 respectively. Prizes will be disbursed to the respective teams’ department, college, laboratory, or other eligible university component as specified by the consensus of the team.
The challenge kicks off on Oct. 1 and is open to students at accredited higher education institutions.
