At the request of the state Natural Resources Agency, UCSC is leading an
evaluation of water importation concepts for the long term restoration and
management of the Salton Sea. Located near the Mexican border, the Salton
Sea is California's largest lake and is shrinking due to water transfers
out of the region. Our project is looking at environmental, social,
economic, public health, cultural, engineering, diplomatic, and other
aspects of importation concepts for long-term restoration. 5 UCSC grad
students have been employed on the project.
We have an opportunity to invite the leading scholars and practitioners on
Salton Sea restoration to give presentations. We will learn about how the
state and region are dealing with cascading impacts on the region as the
sea shrinks away due to reduced inflows.
The Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center is sponsoring a virtual writing group for graduate students working on queer and/or trans issues and identities. The group will meet three times a quarter to write and chat together, and the third session of each quarter will be a space to share writing and workshop. Grads who attend the first two sessions will be eligible for a DoorDash gift card to get a free meal for the third session!

The CSE Directed Reading Program is an opportunity for graduate students to work one on one with undergraduates for a quarter to help them study an advanced topic that the graduate student is knowledgeable about. The time commitment for graduate students is only 1 hour a week, and would provide valuable mentoring and teaching experience (and potentially future undergraduate research candidates). Participation would be on a quarter by quarter basis, so that if you get really busy one quarter or are no longer interested in mentoring you can stop participating easily.

IBUILD Graduate Research Fellowship

The Innovation in Buildings (IBUILD) Graduate Research Fellowship is now accepting applications through December 1, 2021 (5:00 PM EST).
What will I be doing? You will get to advance your graduate research by receiving research and educational support to conduct innovative research at your home institution in an area with demonstrated relevance to building energy efficiency. To ensure an impactful fellowship, you will also gain professional development, mentoring, networking, and support for internship opportunities.
Why should I apply? In addition to advancing your graduate research, you will 1) enhance your education and training in building technologies fields; 2) increase your marketability in these disciplines; 3) gain access to top scientists in the building energy efficiency field; and 4) gain insight into research and career opportunities through your research experiences.
Where will I be located? The IBUILD Fellowship is designed to support research at your home college or university. IBUILD Fellows may be required to take occasional trips to the BTO office or a national laboratory, when applicable, to meet program representatives.
You will receive a competitive stipend of $35,000, an allowance to offset the costs of health insurance up to $16,000, research travel and materials up to $12,000, and limited tuition allowance up to $25,000.
Fellowship will be awarded in 12-month increments based on an annual review of research progress and sustained alignment with designated BTO research areas.

We are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the 2022 Norton Labs Graduate Fellowship program. Our program is aimed to support Ph.D. students who are undertaking innovative research in the areas of privacy and identity, security, machine learning, and human factors. The fellowship provides up to $20,000 USD that can be used to cover one year of the student's tuition and/or reimburse research expenses incurred by the student. We are now accepting applications for the 2022 Norton Labs Graduate Fellowship program. Final award decisions will be made in February 2022.
Fellowships will be bestowed on exceptional Ph.D. students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. Our program aims to fund innovative research that has real-world value and aligns well with key areas within our business. Topics of interest include:
- Privacy and Identity: Applied and novel techniques for privacy and identity-protection objectives such as authentication, authorization, verifiable claims, trust, anonymity, ubiquitous and usable encryption, and privacy-preserving analytics.
- Security: Achieving security objectives in consumer-related contexts including operating systems, web, mobile devices, Internet of Things, and cloud-based services through such mechanisms as trusted hardware, secure programming languages, security by design, threat and malware characterization, and auditing and deception techniques.
- Machine Learning: Robustness, interpretability, security, privacy, and accountability of machine learning systems. This includes scalable machine learning methods for graph and time-series analyses, anomaly detection, natural language processing, and distributed model training, in support of the privacy/identity and security areas mentioned above.
- Human Factors: Applications of psychology, sociology, anthropology, behavioral economics, human-computer interaction, linguistics, and other human sciences to security and privacy. These include usable security, use of technology for social good, effective notifications for privacy, security, and identity theft, and both human-assisted AI and AI-assisted humans.
**Provisions of the Award**
The Norton Labs Graduate Fellowship provides up to $20,000 USD that may be used to cover one year of the student's tuition fees and/or reimburse expenses incurred by the student during research collaboration with Norton Labs. Common examples of expenses include, but not limited to, conference registration fees, travel expenses, hardware, etc. If the recipient's intended use of the endowment is to cover tuition, this portion of the award will be made available through the university.
Most importantly, each award includes a salaried internship with Norton Labs. In most cases, interns will collaborate with Norton Labs at one of our locations (Culver City, CA, USA; Mountain View, CA, USA; Dublin, Ireland; Sophia-Antipolis, France). Please note that all fellowship applicants shall be considered for internships and full-time employment with NortonLifeLock and may be encouraged to apply for open positions.
- Applying students must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program.
- Preference will be given to students who desire to work in an industrial research lab and to those working on innovative research projects in areas related to NortonLifeLock's businesses and interests.
- Recipients will also be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence and their academic progress to date as evidenced by publications. Typically, award recipients are expected to have produced multiple relevant publications at top-tier conferences.

The Center for Engineering MechanoBiology (CEMB) is launching a new fellowship program for STEM Master’s students enrolled at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) or emerging MSIs (URM population of >15%) who have a strong interest in conducting research and pursuing a PhD upon graduation. The goal of this fellowship program is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities pursuing graduate degrees in STEM-related fields. Additionally, we hope to build stronger relationships with MSI institutions and faculty through collaborative research projects. Accepted fellows will conduct a collaborative thesis project with faculty from their home institution and the CEMB. In the summer after their first year, fellows will conduct research in the CEMB collaborator’s lab, and then continue their work during the second year of their master’s program. The program will also offer monthly mentoring and networking opportunities to prepare fellows for research, grad school applications, and the PhD path.
This is a great funding opportunity to support a master’s student in your lab: fellows will receive a 1-year stipend of approximately $31,600 and $10,000 in funds to support research at their home institution and travel to collaborating labs and conferences.
We strongly encourage faculty to recommend prospective and current master’s students for this fellowship. The METEOR fellowship will support exceptional researchers from groups
historically underrepresented in the field. They will conduct
cutting-edge research as part of a vibrant community, and prepare for
careers in academia or industry. Each fellow will be hosted by a
research group with synergistic scientific interests and receive
research training, mentoring, and guidance from faculty researchers at
MIT CSAIL and mentorship from researchers at a partner company.

holders) or DACA recipients and meet one or more of the following
- Member of an ethnic or racial group historically underrepresented in
graduate education at MIT (Black/African American, American

MBARI’s Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity for talented college students (undergraduate and graduate) and educators to work directly with MBARI scientists, engineers and communicators. MBARI’s state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including research vessels, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), offer educators and students unique opportunities to collaborate on advanced research and development projects. The program immerses interns in collaborative teams as they learn innovative research and engineering techniques and improve communication skills. Each intern will have an MBARI mentor who will supervise a specific project for a 10-week duration. Interns also serve as peer-mentors to each other.

Winter - Summer 2022 CITL GSR Opportunity
The Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL) seeks one 50% Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) for Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters 2022 to support CITL’s Program Evaluation efforts.
Evaluation is a systematic and intentional process of gathering and analyzing data (quantitative and qualitative) to inform decision-making and action about programs. The GSR will assist with the continued development and refinement of CITL’s integrated program evaluation plan, create survey protocols and other data collection tools, collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data, and draft reports.
The GSR reports directly to Dr. Samara Foster, CITL’s Managing Director, with indirect supervision from Dr. Jody Greene, CITL’s Founding Director. As a key component of the position, the GSR will receive close mentorship and support to develop skills. Below is a list of the main responsibilities and expectations of the GSR position. Other related tasks will be discussed on an ongoing basis.

Draft and finalize reports
Meet regularly with the CITL Directors to discuss progress

Experience with survey design and analysis
Experience with program evaluation and/or mixed methods social science research

Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of people, such as faculty, students, staff, and administrators
This GSR position will cover Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters of 2022 with a standard 50% time GSR appointment, which includes fee remission and GSHIP health insurance. GSR salary is determined at the divisional level and is therefore dependent upon the GSR’s home department and year in program.
