MIT CSAIL Postdoctoral Fellowship
POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM OPPORTUNITY AT MIT’S COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE LAB (CSAIL)
Priority Application Due Date Extended to February 1, 2022*
As part of our continuing commitment to excellence and equity, we at MIT CSAIL are excited to announce our second annual Mentored Opportunity in Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (METEOR) to broaden participation in computing and artificial intelligence.
The METEOR fellowship will support exceptional researchers from groups historically underrepresented in the field. They will conduct cutting-edge research as part of a vibrant community, and prepare for careers in academia or industry. Each fellow will be hosted by a research group with synergistic scientific interests and receive research training, mentoring, and guidance from faculty researchers at MIT CSAIL and mentorship from researchers at a partner company.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card holders) or DACA recipients and meet one or more of the following criteria:
Member of an ethnic or racial group historically underrepresented in graduate education at MIT (Black/African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or other Native Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latinx)
Being of a gender or orientation identity historically underrepresented in computer science and artificial intelligence,
including women, trans of any gender, or non-binary
A scholar participating in a fellowship or academic support program vetted by MIT (CSAIL will verify an applicant’s status while pursuing a doctoral degree at a U.S. institution)
First-generation college students who were the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college or university
Experiences overcoming significant challenges in their path toward graduate school -- examples include but are not limited to:
Managing a disability
Veteran status
Single parent
Holding DACA status
Financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances
As with our 2021 fellows, postdoctoral researchers selected this round will be awarded a one-year funded appointment (renewable for a second year) and will conduct cutting-edge research at MIT CSAIL on computer science and artificial intelligence topics of their choice. `
* Applications may be submitted on a rolling basis, with priority given to those received by February 1, 2022. For more details about this program, eligibility, and the application process, please visit the METEOR program website.
UCSC TAPS Vanpool
The UCSC Vanpool program is accepting UCSC students, faculty, and staff for new and existing vanpool routes. Join one of the UCSC vanpools from Watsonville, Monterey, or Salinas, or form a new group that wants to commute together, save money and enjoy the ride with other UCSC affiliates. Our Monterey and San Jose routes are looking for staff or grad students who want to train to be full-time or part-time van drivers. Find out if you qualify and you could have your fees fully or partially waived. Email vanpool-group@ucsc.edu to take advantage of a free trial to see if vanpooling is for you!
UC HSI Pre Professoriate Fellows CALL
The program’s goal is to enhance faculty pathways for historically underrepresented groups, particularly Chicanx/Latinx, African Americans, American Indians/Native Americans, Filipinx, and Pacific Islanders in all disciplines; women in STEM; and Asian Americans in the humanities and social sciences. The intent of the program is to provide fellowships for domestic historically underrepresented minorities from federally-designated Californi
This UC PPPF is only available to UC doctoral students who are matriculated in academic PhD programs and have advanced to candidacy. Professional students (e.g. M.D., J.D.) are not eligible.
A note regarding students receiving a Master’s en route: if a student did not earn a bachelor’s degree from a California HSI, and was not enrolled in a master’s program at a California HSI, but was awarded a master’s degree en route to the PhD (at a UC HSI), that student should NOT be considered eligible for this fellowship. If a student was enrolled in and completed a master’s degree at a California HSI (including a UC HSI), that student is eligible for the fellowship (regardless of whether or not the student completed a bachelor’s degree at a California HSI). It is incumbent upon the graduate divisions to ensure that this guideline is followed. Beyond being contrary to the spirit of the Initiative, awarding the fellowship to a UC HSI student who earned a master’s en route to a PhD but does not hold a bachelor’s degree from a California HSI creates inequity for UC students, since not all PhD programs award a master’s degree en route.
Eligibility Criteria
· Must be exceptional students (as demonstrated by their research achievements).
· Must have received their bachelor’s or master’s degree (please see Master’s definitions and criteria above) from a California Hispanic Serving Institution (CA HSI)—public or private. Associate degrees from California community colleges do not meet the criteria/eligibility.
· Must have advanced to candidacy prior to being selected for the fellowship.
· Must have letters of support from Faculty Advisor(s) that address the student’s performance and potential as an exceptional academic, and comment on the likelihood that the student will pursue a professoriate path after receiving their PhD.
· Must have a demonstrated record of advancing issues of inclusion, equity, and diversity; actively supporting underrepresented communities; and show commitment to pursuing these efforts throughout their career.
If you know of students who meet the eligibility criteria, please encourage them to apply. Interested students should submit the following materials to Assistant Dean, Stephanie Casher (scasher@ucsc.edu) by Friday, February 18, 2022:
- Letter of application (2 pages maximum) from the nominee/student that speaks to the eligibility criteria and how much fellowship support the student has received to date
- Letters of support from Faculty Advisor(s)
MBARI Summer Internship Program - MBARI
MBARI’s Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity for talented college students (undergraduate and graduate) and educators to work directly with MBARI scientists, engineers and communicators. MBARI’s state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including research vessels, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), offer educators and students unique opportunities to collaborate on advanced research and development projects. The program immerses interns in collaborative teams as they learn innovative research and engineering techniques and improve communication skills. Each intern will have an MBARI mentor who will supervise a specific project for a 10-week duration. Interns also serve as peer-mentors to each other.
Applications for the 2022 MBARI internship (June 6 – August 12) will be accepted through February 7, 2022 at 8 am (Pacific).
