Monday, April 4th Graduate Student Enrollment & Fee Payment
If you have not paid your registration fees or enrolled in the minimum number of courses by this date, you will be charged a $50 late fee. Please keep in mind that pending aid (Fellowship, GSR, TA) will not credit your account until you are enrolled in at least 5 units.
Monday, April 4th Graduate Student Part-Time Status
This is the deadline to apply for reduced course load and fees. Part-time status forms must be approved/signed by your faculty advisor and submitted to the BSOE Graduate Advising office by the posted deadline. Part-time application forms are available on the Graduate Division's website.
Thursday, April 7th Deadline To Apply For Degree
If you plan to complete your MS or PhD this quarter (Spring 2022), the degree application needs to be submitted to BSOE Graduate Advising office. This is also the deadline to pay for filing fee, if applicable. More guidelines for graduating are available on the Graduate Advising website.
Friday, April 15th Deadline to Add/Drop/Swap Courses
This is your last day to add, drop and swap courses. You will not be able to drop or withdraw from courses after this deadline has passed. If you are enrolled in a placeholder class, you MUST drop it by this deadline. More information on how to add, drop, and swap classes is available on the registrar website.
Friday, May 6th Leave of Absence Spring Deadline
Deadline to petition for leave of absence (LOA) beginning the next quarter. LOA forms must be approved/signed by your faculty advisor and submitted to the BSOE Graduate Advising office by the posted deadline. LOA application forms are available on the Graduate Division's website.
Friday, May 27th Grade Option
This is your last day to change your grading option for any courses you are enrolled in.
IMPORTANT: The system defaults to Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading. Instructions for how to change your grading option to letter grades (ABC) can be found here.

The Faculty Community Networking Program was created to provide DEI arenas of community, development, and support for faculty from historically marginalized communities on campus. In this forum, leaders of these groups will present the issues and recommendations that emerged from their collective discussions, and report back on their groups’ experiences in trying to improve faculty community, development, and support. Discussion will focus on how to move this work forward.

Friday, April 1– Calling Out Whiteness in University Structures of Leadership
Centering the voices and lived experiences of faculty of color (FOC) navigating university leadership is critical for exposing and transforming problematic structures. From a brief research talk, audiences will learn how FOC navigate and reform structures of Whiteness in leadership. Interactive discussion with divisional deans will follow, with goals of understanding how to bolster the leadership efforts of FOC and undo structures of Whiteness.

TBD–Recognizing Invisible Labor in the University: Ways Forward
Recent research and social movements have highlighted ways that racism and sexism remain entrenched in the academy. Patterns of faculty workload show clear inequities, with faculty from historically minoritized groups disproportionately doing more service, diversity and mentoring work, with women faculty doing more teaching and service. These activities are essential to university functioning, yet are often invisible and unrewarded, leading to lower productivity and decreased retention. In this event, our panelists will discuss examples of promising practices and policies that have been developed both within the University of California system and beyond, for recognizing and rewarding invisible labor.

This program allows students the opportunity for hands-on experience with SDSC’s latest supercomputer, Expanse.
The UCSC Vanpool program is accepting UCSC students, faculty, and staff for new and existing vanpool routes. Join one of the UCSC vanpools from Watsonville, Monterey, or Salinas, or form a new group that wants to commute together, save money and enjoy the ride with other UCSC affiliates. The Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS) is seeking proposals for new research and incubator projects to be reviewed at the Spring 2022 CROSS Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) meeting, which will be held April 21.
Proposals are due on April 4. If a proposal is shortlisted, the project lead will be invited to make a 15-20 minute presentation to the CROSS IAB and Advisory Committee.

UCSC faculty and PhD students who will have completed their class work by the end of Spring 2022 are encouraged to propose research projects. Funding for selected research projects cover the costs for one graduate student researcher (GSR) position. Research projects should raise a fundamental research question and open a plausible path to open source software that would be widely adopted. Research projects should also fit within the list of suggested topics included in the Call.
Recent PhD graduates or those graduating by the end of Spring 2022 from any university are welcome to propose incubator projects. Selected incubator projects fund one post-doc as an Open Source Incubator Fellow. This Fellowship is intended for postdoctoral scholars who want to grow contributor communities around their open source research prototypes and who can play the role of "open source ambassador" at UC Santa Cruz, including through exemplifying open source project and community management practices, sharing their experiences as a mentor to students, and as a classroom instructors for courses that teach students how to productively engage in open source projects. The incubator proposal should also show strong evidence that the open source project would meet with great interest by at least one well-established open source community.

Opportunity: Henry and Vera Piatt Fellowship
Deadline: April 20, 2022
Underwritten by the Capitola-Aptos Rotary Foundation, the Piatt Fellowship will provide a single award of $15,000 to a graduate of a Santa Cruz County Public High School who is pursuing a graduate degree at UC Santa Cruz in one of the science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) disciplines during the 2022-23 academic year.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
● Be a US citizen.
● A graduate of a public high school in Santa Cruz County and possessing a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
● Pursuing a Ph.D. in the science, math, technology or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. If no suitable Ph.D. candidate can be found, then a second-year Master’s student is acceptable.
● Student recipient must be in good academic standing and in successful pursuit of their graduate degree. Ranked priority for qualified recipients shall be a student who:
1. Is in the final stages of their graduate degree, i.e. conducting original research and preparing their dissertation,
2. Has passed their qualifying exam(s) and is advanced to candidacy,
3. Is a second or third-year student, or
4. Is a student entering a graduate program in the appropriate disciplines at UCSC.
1. Completed Piatt Fellowship Application/Information Sheet form (attached).
2. A letter of recommendation from the department chair, faculty advisor, or faculty sponsor that describes the student’s academic merit and how the student will benefit from the award.
3. Unofficial Transcripts
4. (Optional) Relevant material that would assist with the selection process - in the past this has included visual aids (charts, diagrams, formulas), research results, published articles/reports – Please limit optional material to 10 single spaced pages or 1 published article/report.
Selection Process and Distribution of Funds
The Graduate Division will convene a committee of faculty members from STEM disciplines to select the Piatt Fellowship awardee in early May 2022.
Piatt Fellowship funds will be awarded for the 2022-23 academic year and can be used for all costs related to successful pursuit of the graduate degree, including but not limited to fees, tuition, research, equipment, childcare or living expenses, etc. The Piatt Fellow will receive their award prior to the beginning of the 2022-23 academic year, probably in August 2022.
Please note: The selected student is required to attend at least 1-2 meetings of the Capitola Aptos Rotary Club. Typically, the first is in the fall where the recipient will be officially presented with the award and meet the benefactors, and second, later in the year, the Piatt Fellow will give a presentation to the Capitola-Aptos Rotary Club on their research supported by this award.

Rhode Island College is seeking to fill two tenure-track faculty positions.Rhode Island College is a mid-sized institution of about 6400 students located in a suburban setting in Providence. We service a diverse student population with over 40% of the undergraduates are students of color and over 45% are the first in their family to attend college. Recently, RIC was federally designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). We seek candidates whose background, teaching interests, and research agenda will help foster diversity with the College. The Department of Biology offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Health Sciences, and Medical Imaging as well as a minor in biology. We also have a graduate program offering a M. A. and a Certificate of Graduate Study. In addition, the Biology Department provides courses taken by students in other programs across the campus, such as Nursing and Education. Faculty within the Biology Department have the potential to access state-wide funding opportunities: RI-EPSCOR and RI-INBRE. As a small state in New England, Rhode Island has much to offer with proximity to beaches, wooded areas, and the cultural and academic resources found in Providence and nearby Boston and New York.
One position is for a coastal ecologist/marine biologist while the other position calls for someone with training in anatomy and/or physiology. Although the successful candidate is expected to develop a research program involving undergraduates and Master’s students, the primary focus of this position is education. The Computer Science Laboratory at SRI is looking for a summer intern this year (see job posting below). The student will work with Dr. Huascar Sanchez and other CSL researchers on detecting emergent anomalous developer behavior in open-source projects by leveraging machine learning, data science, and source code analysis. The internship is geared towards PhD students with machine learning and code analysis interests.
