Friday, July 8th Deadline To Apply For Degree
If you plan to complete your MS or PhD this quarter (Summer 2022), the degree application needs to be submitted to BSOE Graduate Advising office. This is also the deadline to pay for filing fee, if applicable. More guidelines for graduating are available on the Graduate Advising website.
Friday, August 26th Leave of Absence Summer Deadline
Deadline to petition for leave of absence (LOA) beginning the next quarter. LOA forms must be approved/signed by your faculty advisor and submitted to the BSOE Graduate Advising office by the posted deadline. LOA application forms are available on the Graduate Division's website.
LitFellow Scholarship
LitFellow.com is very excited to tell you that we are offering a $1000 scholarship to students of Baskin School of Engineering.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to participate in the scholarship contest, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Must be currently attending or planning to attend a college or university during the academic year 2022.
Must be in good academic standing with your current educational institution.
Applicants under 18, must have permission from a parent or legal guardian.
Must apply to the contest by email and provide your name, address, and the name of the institution you are attending or plan to attend.
Must provide your written essay by the deadline of 1st December 2022.
A winner will be chosen on 1st January 2023

City of Hope Graduate Student Symposium
You are cordially invited to attend City of Hope’s 6th Annual Biomedical Research Graduate Student Symposium to be held virtually on August 26th, 2022. This one-day event will promote professional development and foster communication between graduate students in the Southern California area.
We highly encourage Master’s and PhD students to present their current research! Abstracts of 500 words or less can be submitted online for oral or poster presentations. Abstracts are due Friday, July 15th. Both oral and poster presentations are eligible for monetary prizes.
This year we will be hosting a science communication seminar and a career panel with COH alumni from public policy, academia, and industry. Our Keynote address will be by the fabulous Dr. Maike Sander from University of California, San Diego. Details for all our speakers can be found on our website.

Opportunity: The Hertz Fellowship

Overview: The Hertz Fellowship is awarded annually to the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology. Using a rigorous, merit-based process, Hertz identifies innovators with the greatest potential to create transformative solutions to the world's most urgent challenges.
The foundation does not award fellowships based on an applicant’s particular field of study; however, they do require that applicants direct their work toward understanding and solving major, near-term problems facing society. The applicant should advocate for their specific field of study and demonstrate how it will be applied to address real-world challenges with the greatest impact.

Eligibility:
All eligible applicants must:
● be college seniors, first-year graduate students, or in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school;
● intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering;
● intend to direct their studies toward understanding and solving major, near-term problems facing society; and
● be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
Hertz does not award fellowships to applicants pursuing professional degrees other than a PhD, such as an MD, JD, MBA, DPH, or DVM. However, they will support the PhD portion of an MD/PhD program.
Award Amount & Terms
The Hertz Fellowship compensation package includes a cost-of-education allowance and a personal stipend valued at up to $250,000.

UMBC Fellows for Faculty Diversity Program
As of August 1, 2022, UMBC is accepting applications for Cohort VII (July 1, 2023-June 30, 2025) of the Fellows for Faculty Diversity Program!

UMBC will appoint recent recipients of a Ph.D. degree, including Ed.D, DFA, and MFA, as Faculty Fellows for a two-year term in-residence fellowship beginning July 1, 2023. Fellows receive a starting stipend of $54,500, health benefits, $5,500 for conference travel, preparation of scholarly/creative work, and technology needs. Fellows are also provided with office space, library and other privileges at the university. During the two-year fellowship, fellows are provided teaching and research mentors and specialized professional development opportunities. In addition to pursuing their research and or creative/artistic agenda, fellows teach one course a year in their host department.
Applications for study in any field represented at UMBC are welcome.

SZ4D (sz4d.org) is a multi-institution collaboration that holds workshops to build a plan for a major instrumentation and science initiative studying earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and tsunamis. Under the supervision of the SZ4D Program Manager, the incumbent is responsible for supporting SZ4D workshops at UC Santa Cruz and elsewhere, including organizing meeting logistics, coordinating travel arrangements and reimbursements, and maintaining websites.

Salary range: $24.64 - $26.34/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Work schedule: Part-time, 50% time (20 hours/week up to 1,000 hours per year)

EEB Department Assistant - (Job ID 39926)
The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, located in the Coastal Biology Building on the Coastal Science Campus, is a dynamic group comprised of instructional and research units and a variety of support programs and facilities with a staff committed to providing excellent service to students, faculty, and researchers. The department has approximately 1000 declared and proposed undergraduate students in four distinct programs and 90 graduate students working towards Ph.D. and Master's degrees. EEB offers a significant number of courses (160 laboratory, seminar, and lecture courses with at least 200 secondary sections), many in support of other majors. The department is closely aligned with the research and faculty in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology, Environmental Studies, and Ocean Sciences as well as outside agencies NOAA, NMFS, MBARI, California Academy of Sciences, and others.
Under the direction of the Department Manager, the incumbent is responsible for providing academic and administrative support to the department in all functional areas. Primary areas of responsibility include support for academic personnel actions, curriculum, and instructional support, financial transactions, web management, and special projects. These duties require staying up to date with ever-changing campus policies, procedures, and systems related to all aspects of working at UC Santa Cruz.
